Barton Moss Primary School in Salford engaged a private provider to deliver school sports and PE. The Provider was a large organisation that operated in approximately 20 schools in the local authority. There was no planning, monitoring or evaluation of lessons provided and the delivery was expensive and not matched to National Curriculum objectives. Following a review, the Headteacher decided to tender the contract and Kickstart were invited to apply.
What Kickstart Did
Kickstart aim to build long-term working relationships with schools so our first step was to visit the school, meet with staff and evaluate the current service. Kickstart reduced the overall spend on PE and school sports but increased the delivery and CPD offered to staff. In addition, Kickstart also engaged with the local cluster and provided more opportunities for internal and external sport competitions for children in KS1 and KS2. In addition, Early years also started to receive structured Physical Education which was linked to the Physical Development section of the EYFS.
Year 1 Outcomes

- After-school sports clubs in place
Kickstart Education has been working in close partnership with Barton Moss Community Primary School since January 2016. We first came across Dean enthusiastically running an after school Zumba class with a group of parents and children in a neighbouring school and wanted some of that enthusiasm for our children.
The Kickstart team have worked with us to develop our PE and sports provision, not only providing excellent CPD for teachers for PE lessons, but also working with our lunchtime staff to teach the children to improve their lunchtime play experiences. Parents join their children and staff after school on a Thursday for our increasingly popular and energetic Intergenerational Club. By the end of our first term together we attained the Bronze Award for sport, and we intend to aim even higher this year.
The Kickstart team are now an integral part of the Barton Moss team. Parents, children and staff all look forward to Kickstart days!Daryl Anns, Headteacher
